The most devastating ice storms in Kansas have often been overlooked by people checking to see the weather before moving here. While Kansas is a place where tornadoes are commonplace, because of its climate and geographic positioning, a lot of people don’t think that something like an ice storm could even occur here. However, there have been a few truly terrible ice storms in Kansas in recent years:
- One of them happened in 2007, and it affected the entire state of Kansas. More than 260,000 people remained without power, and the total damage to the infrastructure comprised about $136 million. Although the damage to private property and buildings was also considerable, there were actually no fatalities recorded.
- In 2005 there was another storm that also affected most of Kansas, but to a smaller extent than the aforementioned ice storm. However, even though some of the damage wasn’t as pronounced, large trees were split and fell, power lines were severely damaged, and four people were known to have died.
- An older event affected Kansas in 1984, when 100,000 people remained without power, and the ice storm swept across the state for 2 days. In some areas, power wasn’t restored for up to an entire week.
As you can see, Kansas has more than its fair share of powerful ice storms, and they also have their fair share of great Wichita general contractors who are there in time of need. Fortunately, even though some of these can be strong, they aren’t as potentially dangerous as other weather anomalies and storms that can affect Kansas and the surrounding regions.
